The moderators red civic standard and redzcstandardhatch decided to get together this past weekend and have some fun.
1989 Honda Civic AWD Realtime Wagon
IHI RHB5 turbo off of early Probe making 8 lbs of boost
HF manifold/BMC adapter plate/2.5" exhaust
DSM 390cc injectors tuned with wideband and TurboEdit
Here is what we started with:
Here are the pics of the buildup. Jabaay'dddd (redzcstandardhatch)
Make room for the turbo!! Didn't need that much room. Left the radiator in for the whole install.
Sawzall some room for the front mount:
Mount the turbo up:
Oil return. Drilled into the pan because we didn't want to remove the transmission to remove the oilpan.
Battery relocate via the bungy.
Intercooler piping:
Intercooler modified from 2.5" to 2" with aluminum plate (good work Adam)
The Jabaay boys doing what they do best:
Completed intercooler piping:
Downpipe and 2.5" mandrel exhaust:
Bumper back on:
BOOSTED!!!!!!
Video of boosted donuts:

talk about a LONG day.
from 9 am friday till 2 am sat. morning. with one break to get sweet mexican food with my ladyfriend.
it was kind of a pain, but totally fun. i love hanging out and boosting rigs, and taking a day off of work. i bet the car runs mid 14's....it gets out of the hole as hard as you want, and makes full boost at like 2k rpms, but the turbo isnt a power-monster....but it is perfectly matched to the needs of the car, and the capabilities of the trans/transfer case. |

I think you made a really good choice on that turbo. Before I bought my Civic, I had a 1991 626 GT. Lemme tell ya, that little turbo is like the little engine that could. It runs out of steam on the top end, but it'll push 12-14psi below 5krpm all day long. IHI is not well known in the US, but they make a very good product.
My car had almost 170k miles on it (with the original turbo.) It should last quite a while on your car if you take care of it. |
